Believe me or not, Load was the first Metallica album I've heard completely - like, taking borrowed from a friend, sitting and listening to all stuff, trying to read the lyrics etc. Sure I was a late banger, and obviously the Black album singles wasn't strange to me. But the fact is, when I've heard so many critics on it through the time, I just couldn't believed, 'cause to me it is hard rock and sometimes heavy or blues and country and everything. Knowing this kind of material, I've became more interested to hear another masterpieces from the trash-metal era, and never disliked it. You know, we can't compare Bob marley with Bob dylan just because they have the similar names, so it's all a question of respecting or not what labels the artists choose during their carreer. I love Megadeth, Slayer and Iron Maiden, but don't know if they had still a good time by playing the same shit for three decades. You have to change to don't go crazy, artists are humans too. And so occurs that Load is an awesome album, with an unique style. Ain't my bitch is a great opening, with Hetfield talking to old fans directly (what's wrong? / i've already heard this song / before you arrive / but now it's time to kiss your ass goodbye). 2x4 is like the only chance I had untill now to hear something like a "metal-blues"; and there is The house jack built, with those incredible doom-feeling wah-wah screams... Didn't like Until it sleep's opening, but it was ok to hear it before (as one of the album singles and all); unlike Hero of the day, which catch me at first by that riff opening... So it has some ballads too, and afterall, what metallica album didn't have theirs? We know even Fade to black had caused the same "WTF?" comments by early fans. Bleeding me, Thorn within and Outlaw torn did the work perfectly, and Ronnie was something even non-heavy metal fans have to stop and say, "WTF? How can Metallica came with such cool stuff?".

Unfortunately they didn't repeat it in Reload or any other album, specially st. anger and death magnetic, but it is still there for me to hear, as the album that somewhat introduced me to heavy / trash metal.

Thanks for the article. Very educational. My siblings and I take a trip to Memphis every summer. We go to Graceland, Beale Street, the Sun Studio, and then to the blues clubs for the evening. Always a good time!

I love this album, love BHG, love my old roommates and listening to this, leaping through the clouds of "smoke" in the living room. The roof is on fire, indeed.

i love this album. and then i discovered pinkerton. and most of my time spent thinking about weezer is mentally gushing over those two albums and agonising over which one i would pick if forced to choose.
i think i would pick the blue album because i fell in love with that first, and nothing beats the potency of my love for that album.
not enough people like weezer. i defend them so ardently because of this album and pinkerton. say what you will about their later stuff, but i forgive them. how can you not.

I remember so well where I was when I heard that Elvis had died. I was a teenager--too young to have dug Elvis in his prime, just the right age to know who he was (and to mock what he had become).

I read an excellent 2-volume biography on him a little while back. I think the first volume is called "Last Train To Memphis". Really sheds a light on his upbringing, through his heyday and his sad demise. A great couple of books if you are interested in the backstory of popular music.

I managed to get the two-disc Badmotorfinger version which at the time seemed very difficult to find but I was young and stupid. Their cover of "Into The Void" still stands up after all these years.

Perhaps:

The Dead Weather - Horehound
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field

If these artists flip your switch, here are some others:

James Brown
Hole
Tool
Violent Femmes
Low by David Bowie
Mission of Burma
Kaki King
